The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "An unidentified large-featured man strikingly dressed in the high fashion on the time, upswept hair in coils and ringlets under a small perching hat, a large locket and chain at the neck. Card backed - appears to have been clipped from an album page. Such permanent photographic processes were usually employed for printing out large volumes, so the subject must have been a more or less public figure whose identity has so far eluded us.'
