Biographical note
The Wellcome Trust Medical Photographic Library (MPL) was established in 1992 and located in the Wellcome Building at 183 Euston Road. The MPL was set up to provide a professional picture library service to authors, publishers and academics drawing on the holdings of the Wellcome Library to maximise publication and dissemination of the collection. The MPL was also responsible for documenting activities, events and people related to the Wellcome Trust as part of its corporate photography workflow. Shoots were commissioned by staff and carried out by Wellcome's in-house photographers at onsite, offsite and international locations. Images captured were catalogued by the MPL and made available for internal use, including in Wellcome publications such as Wellcome News and annual reports and reviews.
In 2007 the MPL was relaunched as Wellcome Images, which was eventually wound down in 2017 following an internal reorganisation of the library. Corporate photography services continue to be carried out by Wellcome's Photography and Digital Production teams.
For a full administrative history of the MPL and Wellcome Images see their associated person entries (links at the bottom of the page).
