Description
Under water, a skeleton wearing a sailor's hat inscribed "Deutsche Marine" drowns and strangles a nurse wearing a Red Cross armband. Apparently represents the torpedo attack on the hospital ship HMS Glenart Castle off Lundy Island by German submarine UC-56 on 26 February 1918 : the ship was sunk with the loss of ca. 150 lives ('Hospital ship sunk. Another Red Cross outrage, 144 persons missing.', The times, 28 February 1918, p. 7)
