Description

Photograph of the side view of a plaster model of a medicine man sucking out disease from a patient with a bone tube, as practiced by the Ojibwe people of North America (also known as Ojibwa or Chippewa). The model was made by Jane Jackson and is based on a drawing by Harold L. MacDonald published in the Seventh Annual report of the Bureau of Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution 1885-1886. The model was acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1944 (accession number R7/1944). It is now held by the Science Museum (object number A656667).
