Launched on 23 September 1985, the campaign aimed to cancel Trident and promote the health services, drawing attention to cuts facing the NHS in comparison with spending on Trident. Treatment not Trident was the first MCANW national campaign, and was backed by members of the medical profession. The campaign involved a poster campaign featuring the slogan, "for the cost of one Trident we could have a decent National Health Service", a nurses bus tour around towns, and lobbying activity.
The campaign was launched with the report, "Trident: a tragedy for the health services". In 1986, MCANW released a new report, "Trident or Health?" with updated information about the expansion of the Trident system and the situation in the NHS. In 1987, the "Treatment not Trident" campaign evolved into "Beds not Bombs", focusing on the resourcing of defence and health.
