Description

(1) Extract from the `Liber Privilegiorum' relating to the `Sacro Monte dell' Abbondanza' of Bergamo. 1644. (2) Printed copy of the `Ordini'. 1635. (3) [Anon.] Collection of 12 poems in Italian [c. 1575]. (4) Fragment of a Herbal in Italian [Early 16th century]. The Herbal (ff. 61-98) is illustrated with 75 crude water-colour drawings of medicinal plants in the style of the earliest printed herbals; in many cases the artist has added human or animal details to the pictures. On fol. 75 is a depiction of a female mandrake. (1) BERGAMO Extracts from the `Liber Privilegiorum': `Li sopra citati Capitoli sono stampati nel Libretto intitolato `Ordini circa il Governo del Sacro Monte dell' Abbondanza' nell' Anno 1644'. (ff. 4-9.) (2) [Printed] BERGAMO. Ordini circa il governo del Sacro Monte dell' Abbondanza. Bergamo: M. A. Rossi. 1635. (ff. 10-23.) (3) [Anon.] Collection of 12 Italian poems. The first is entitled `Capitolo in dishonor della creanza di Giacomo Maria Susio Mirando[lano]', and is followed by Pasquinades in the form of Dialogues between Pasquino and Marforio. There are also the `Lamenti del Duca di Milano', and a longer work beginning `Vergine bella nata in mezzo l'acque/Del gran padre Adria figliola et sposa'. This is followed by a second copy of the same by different contemporary hands, and containing a greater number of lines. [c. 1575] (ff. 24-60, of which ff. 46v-55 are blank). (4) HERBAL in Italian, apparently incomplete at each end. (ff. 61-98.) Pasted inside the upper cover is a slip headed `Miscellanea' with a short list of contents in Italian, by an anonymous 18th century owner and a shelf mark.

1 volume 4 vols. in 1. 4to. 20 x 141/2 cm. 18th cent. vellum binding. The first item is on paper of slightly smaller format (19 x 14 cm.). The foliation is continuous.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Ownership note

Pasted inside the upper cover is a slip headed 'Miscellanea' with a short list of contents in Italian, by an anonymous 18th cent. owner and a shelf mark. Pasted below this is the armorial Ex-libris of Walter Sneyd [1809-1888].
