Tours in the Gulf States

Between 1953 and 1959, Mackenzie went on a tour of Middle Eastern Countries in order to provide recommendations on public health and hygiene. Mackenzie worked as a Medical Advisor, seconded to the Development Division of the Middle East office.

As part of the tour, visits were made to Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Sharjah, Muscat and Syria to observe health and sanitation problems, and to re-establish medical and diplomatic contacts. The work in Middle Eastern countries was carried out by WHO, USA Technical Cooperation Agency, UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWAPRNE), and foreign doctors recruited by Middle East governments.

Surveys were conducted of sanitation and hygiene, examining the cleanliness of public amenities, such as restaurants, refuse disposal, market cleanliness, and domestic sanitation.

Reports detail progress made in the provision of medical services, administration of hospitals, recruitment of medical professionals, health fellowships and training, public health work, including the incidence of diseases such as malaria, and medical provisions, and the influence of British medicine in the Middle East. Some files also include various public health reports on Middle Eastern countries.
